WHS Family,
The Dept. of Transportation made major changes to Old Alabama Rd. over spring break that will significantly affect traffic to and from Woodland for the next several weeks.
The DOT has CLOSED the lanes immediately to the south of WHS and has moved all traffic to the newly-paved lanes, across the median. Exiting campus requires crossing the old road and stopping at the new lanes before proceeding. Entering campus requires an abrupt turn (no turning lane) from the far lanes to the campus entrances.
Additionally, those driving from Hwy 61 (the airport) will experience MAJOR traffic flow changes, to include additional stop signs approaching Old Alabama from both directions AND reconfigured left-turns accessing Old Alabama.
Student drivers are encouraged to leave for school in plenty of time on Monday to navigate the new traffic flow. Delays are expected, and we need ALL Wildcats to arrive safely. If you are able, and your child drives to school, you may want to look at the traffic changes this weekend in preparation for Monday.
Finally, the new lanes do NOT have a turn lane at Douthit Ferry Rd. We expect major backups, especially at dismissal due to busses navigating the intersection. Therefore, until further notice, ALL student drivers and car riders leaving campus before we release buses, will be directed to the airport-side exit, and will be expected to head west. Once buses have cleared the Douthit Ferry intersection, drivers may head out our upper (east) entrance.
We apologize for the inconveniences that this construction continues to cause our students, parents, staff, and guests. We all look forward to the project's completion, but until that time, we will continue to monitor developments and respond in the best interest of student safety.
