Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Mr. Kaleb Harkins!
Mr. Harkins has been our music teacher at Clear Creek since January 2020. He graduated from Reinhardt University in 2019, with a degree in music education. When did Mr. Harkins know he wanted to be a music teacher? In his words, “Music has always been a part of my life ever since elementary school. I had thought about doing something music related, but I wasn’t sure. I didn’t really decide on pursuing it until high school, where I was encouraged by my high school director. There was also a moment when I was singing with my friends for a CD recording at a church in Chattanooga. It was then that I knew this is what I need to be doing.”
Mr. Harkins can always be seen with a smile on his face and most of the time, an instrument in his hands. During his free time, Mr. Harkins enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He also helps serve at his church in Calhoun. Mr. Harkins also takes part in martial arts. He has been participating for 21 years and will sometimes help teach it throughout the week. Additional favorites include watching movies, playing games, reading, and of course, making music!
Lastly, when asked why he loves music so much, Mr. Harkins replied “Music is a very special subject. It can affect people in ways that other subjects just can’t. It is so much more than making a nice sound. It teaches perseverance, discipline, cooperation, fun, creativity, and compassion among other things. These are values that, whether my students pursue music more deeply or not, they can carry with them into their lives. The motto for our room is: “Play Your Part”. Every person has a unique voice, a part to play. When someone is missing, or doesn’t play that part, we are the lesser for it. That means every person matters and can make a big difference. And the best part is, there’s always room for one more. When we work together to create something like music, it truly is an example of the whole being greater than the parts. None of us could create that sound by ourselves, no matter how good you are. We are simply better together. It is my hope that this lesson inspires my students to be their very best in every area long after they leave my room. Music is a great way to teach that lesson. “
