Ask any elementary school teacher and they will tell you, one of the most wonderful weeks of the school year is Read Across America Week! This week normally falls at the beginning of March, with March 2nd being the official Read Across America Day and the birthday of Dr. Seuss! This week is meant to celebrate the love and joy of reading with students across the country, and this year, Cass High's book club got involved!
Throughout the week, members of the Last Word Literary Guild went around to classrooms during Gold Time to check out books on the go! They played music, gave away buttons and bookmarks, and rolled around carts filled with popular titles to check out from our library!
Plus, to make things even more interesting, every student who checked out a book was entered into a drawing to win a Bluetooth Speaker! A winner was drawn at random, and the speaker was awarded to Cass High junior, Miles Cooley!
But they didn't stop there! To cap off what had already been a fun-filled, book-reading good time, the Last Word Literary Guild took a trip to White Elementary School on Friday, March 4th to read to the students there!
Every student at White Elementary got the chance to hear one of these awesome high school kids read stories aloud to them, as well as hear a little bit about why reading is so important. Overall, it was a great experience that left both the students and staff eager to read!
Miss Kayla Jackson, Cass High's media specialist, had this to say:
"We were so happy to get to share our love for literacy with the elementary students, and we want to say a special thank you to the teachers at White Elementary for allowing us to stop by, as well as to Mrs. Cathy Bishop, White Elementary's media specialist, for coordinating this whole event! Last, but most important, thank you to the members of The Last Word Literary Guild. You guys are absolute rock stars in my eyes! I'm already looking forward to next Read Across America Week!"
